The largest city in Wisconsin at a population of 605,000 (and 1.7 million in the greater metropolitan area), Milwaukee is the 22nd largest city in the United States. Milwaukee is approximately 90 miles north of Chicago and 300 miles southeast of the Twin Cities. The climate in Milwaukee is mercurial and often inconsistent, with six months out of the year generally being wet and overcast. Milwaukee tends to have harsh winters, being the second-coldest major city in the country.

The winters are long and frigid, with wet springs and snowfall as late as April. The most favorable time of year to visit Milwaukee is in the summer, when the city comes alive. The city is known for being the setting for many popular movies and television shows, as well as the imagery of its many breweries, such as the Miller-Coors Brewing Company, the Great Lakes Distillery, and its many festive brew pubs.
Transportation in and Around Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is just southeast of the city, and has three concourses: C (for Air Canada, American, AirTran, United, and US Airways), D (for Frontier and Southwest Airlines) and E (for Delta). To get to and from the airport, travelers can take a taxi, an airport taxi-van shuttle, the MCTS bus (which runs most of the day and night), or a coach bus from services such as Metropolitan Shuttle. Air travelers might also come into nearby airports such as Chicago O’Hare or Midway, which might prove a cheaper way to get to Milwaukee than flying in directly.
Milwaukee is also served by Amtrak’s Hiawatha line from Chicago, as well as the Empire Builder line, which runs from Chicago through Milwaukee into Portland and Seattle. Milwaukee is also served by a number of bus companies, including Badger Coaches, Tornado, Megabus, Lamers, Jefferson Lines, Indian Trails, Wisconsin Coach, and Greyhound.
Getting around Milwaukee is relatively easy compared to many major metropolitan areas, with consistent block numbers running north-south and named streets running east-west. Milwaukee has an extensive public transit system managed by MCTS, with inexpensive bus service and a tourist “trolley” bus loop that runs through some of the city’s major attractions. Milwaukee is also a very walkable and bikeable city, particularly in downtown, although travel to the suburbs and outlying areas is likely to require a car, taxi, or shuttle bus.
