Buffalo is the second-largest city in New York State, after New York City. It’s the Western-most point in New York, along the shore of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River. Buffalo’s population is over 260,000, and the Buffalo-Niagara-Cattaraugus combined statistical area has over 1.2 million residents. Buffalo has a reputation of cold and snowy winters, and it has been the site of a few whopping snowstorms over the years – most famously, the Blizzard of ’77 and a snowstorm in 2001 that had seven feet of snow in five days. However, there’s a lot to love about Buffalo – it’s been nicknamed “The City of Good Neighbors”.

But, Buffalo’s not just about snow. In fact, it is the birthplace of the Goo Goo Dolls; folk and alternative rock artist Ani DiFranco; award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates; pop and R&B artist Rick James; William Fargo of Wells Fargo (1818-1881); actresses Christine Baranski and Wendie Malick; actors David Boreanaz, Chad Michael Murray and Kyle Chandler; and journalist Tim Russert (1950-2008).

Travel to Buffalo

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is the main air service to and from the city. There are approximately 110 flights daily with nonstop service to 23 airports. Another option is the Amtrak train along its Empire service line that runs from New York through Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and to Niagara Falls.

Although the city of Buffalo is fairly self-contained, the bedroom communities (notably Grand Island, the Tonawandas, Lackawanna, Hamburg, Orchard Park, West Seneca, Cheektowaga, Amherst and Niagara Falls) are spread out and most residents travel daily between them. If you’re visiting the Buffalo area for business or leisure, it’s likely that you will have occasion to travel from the city to one of the outlying communities. Buffalo’s Metro Rail system has a single line that begins at the University at Buffalo’s South Campus and runs along Main Street to one of the southern-most points of the city. City buses and taxis will be the only public transportation options anywhere in the area that is not along that Main Street line. Thus, if you’re a visitor to Buffalo and will be traveling either within or outside of the immediate downtown area, Metropolitan Shuttle is an excellent choice for transportation for your group.

Buffalo Colleges & Universities

The Buffalo area is home to many innovative, well-reputed educational institutions. There’s a ton of great research going on, and the college communities keep life in Buffalo vibrant and current. If you’re thinking of attending school in the Buffalo area, here are your options:

Buffalo Sports

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that one of Buffalo’s hallmarks is its residents’ wild loyalty to its professional sports teams: the Buffalo Bills football and Buffalo Sabers hockey. When their teams are doing well, you can practically feel the excitement in the air in Buffalo. The Bills play in the Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, and the Sabers play in the First Niagara Center in the city of Buffalo. Buffalo is also home to the minor-league baseball team the Buffalo Bisons, the Buffalo Bandits indoor lacrosse, and FC Buffalo soccer.
