Pittsburgh straddles the Ohio, Monongahela, and Allegheny rivers, and is called by many of its 305,000 people the “City of Bridges” for the over four hundred bridges that connect the city. Also known as the “Steel City” for the many steel-related companies that make their home there, today’s Pittsburgh is home to Fortune 500 companies, sixty-eight colleges and universities, and top-shelf leaders in research in development.

But Pittsburgh is also known as one of the world’s most livable cities, with an eye toward sustainable energy and high ratings when it comes to cost of living and opportunity. Pittsburgh has been called a great place to raise a family by publications such as Forbes and The Economist.

Pittsburgh consists of a downtown area (known as the Golden Triangle), and four areas surrounding:

  • The North Side, an historic center and home to Heinz Field, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Allegheny Observatory
  • The South Side, a developing area that once centered on housing for railroad and mill workers
  • The East End, home to many of Pittsburgh’s educational landmarks, such as the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University
  • The West End, a residential area full of local businesses and historic landmarks

Here are a few of the things you can see and do from the comfort of a charter bus in Pittsburgh.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Charter a bus rental in Pittsburgh and make your way to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Found in Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, the Phipps Conservatory is an historic landmark appearing on the National Register of Historic Places. It was presented to the City of Pittsburgh as a gift by steel baron Henry Phipps in 1893. A masterpiece of Victorian architecture, the fourteen-room conservatory is also one of the most eco-friendly structures in the world, earning Platinum and Silver certifications from LEED. Visitors can explore the fourteen rooms at their leisure and enjoy vastly different themes and aesthetics; from the Orchid Room in the west wing, to the butterfly exhibits in the Stove Room and the miniature railroad in the South Conservatory.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History

There’s no better destination for a school bus rental in Pittsburgh than the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Founded by Andrew Carnegie himself in 1896, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History is among the top-ranked museums in America. Its galleries contain over twenty million specimens. The museum receives approximately 60,000 school visits a year, and actively participates in outreach and education programs, traveling to schools in western Pennsylvania to help children learn about natural history. One of the museum’s claims to fame is its 1899 discovery of Diplodocus carnegii, which now sits among the museum’s record-setting collection of Jurassic-period dinosaurs. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is one of four Carnegie museums in Pittsburgh, the others being the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Carnegie Science Center.

Cathedral of Learning

The Cathedral of Learning stands on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh. It’s one of the tallest educational buildings in the world at 42 stories high, and has over two thousand rooms, including a four-story vaulted Gothic study. Modeled after a Gothic Revival cathedral, the “Cathy” (as it’s called by locals) includes conference rooms, theaters, food courts, a ballroom, an auditorium, and much more. Visitors will find plenty to explore, including the lushly appointed Babcock Room, the relaxed atmosphere of the Braun Room, the expansive Croghan-Schenley Ballroom, and the world-famous Humanities Center. You could book a coach bus rental in Pittsburgh and spend a day (if not more) seeing the sights at the Cathedral of Learning,

National Aviary

Bird lovers will find over five hundred birds spanning a hundred and fifty species at the National Aviary, and you have only to rent a bus in Pittsburgh to go see it. The Aviary’s collection is hugely diverse, including such specimens as the hyacinth macaw, the green-backed trogon, the blue-winged mountain tanager, the scarlet-headed blackbird, and spectacled owls. Many of the Aviary’s birds are endangered, and the facility is working to help preserve even more species in captivity. The National Aviary, originally a public institution, was sold to private investors in 1991 as part of a program to save it from closing, and was granted honorary national status in 1993. Over 100,000 bird lovers visit the Aviary each year.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

At the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, guests will find over four thousand animals on display, including twenty endangered species. The zoo features a 45,000 square foot aquarium, a 16-acre indoor rainforest, three bear exhibits, a replica of a coastal fishing village, and “The Islands,” an exhibit which focuses on such endangered animals as Galapagos tortoises, Philippine crocodiles, and more. Since its opening in 1898, the Pittsburgh Zoo has grown more and more focused on conservation and protection of threatened species. Among its claims to fame is the successful birth of an African elephant calf in 1999, a litter of Amur tigers in 2006, and a baby sea lion in 2009. Gather your friends and family, book a minibus rental in Pittsburgh, and see what the zoo has to offer.
